You do have to be a member of the CB Ruritan to use the park. It's very easy to do and VERY worth the $25-per-family membership fee. To obtain, just call the number & they'll tell you where to find them (they're "office" is located one road over on James Monroe Drive). You'll get two stickers to put on your cars. This is so they can easily see that cars parked there are, indeed, members. The perks are many and I wish I'd have looked into it years ago. There's not much to do in and around Capon Bridge and definitely no close places to swim. My whole family absolutely can't stand going to the pools in Winchester because they are always SO busy that no one can enjoy swimming. My kids also want to use pool toys and floaties, but the pools don't allow these things (safety hazard due to congested pool). At the CB Ruritan Park the experience is much different. There's tons of shade, sheltered and unsheltered picnic tables and benches. Maybe it's being close to the river, but even on 90+ degree days it feels so much cooler at the park and there's always a little breeze. Sometimes people reserve the shelter for birthday parties which is a great idea. There's also a slide and swings for the kids to play on and the porta potty (you can see it in pics) is ALWAYS super clean and relatively spacious...you can tell they take good care of the area. The main attraction for us is the river. I do recommend water shoes as there are some slippery rocky areas once you get past the sand. It IS a river. But the swimming area is huge and we have yet to go far enough to where it was too deep. There's so much room for kids to swim and play easily even when there's a lot of people, which there hardly ever is. Often it's only us and I'm always surprised, but I think it's like a hidden gem and those that know about it don't tell everyone because they want to keep it to themselves maybe? We just love it. We always take my sister's kids from Winchester with us and they never want to swim in a pool in town again. They also have a blast walking over where the river narrows (and visibly faster moving) and looking under rocks for crayfish, salamanders, baby catfish, etc. It's really a beautiful, well kept little recreation area and I am still kicking myself for letting so many summers go by without getting a membership. Wonderful little place looked after by kind, caring people!
